This is Liz Welsh, a member of Rebel Legion in our Blue Ridge Base of the North and South Carolinas division. I was base commander when her award came through and I was honored to present it to her in a special ceremony/gathering.

Congrats, Liz, and thanks for being a valued member of Rebel Legion!

DragonCon 2014

This was possibly our most successful DragonCon to date. Last year was much more hectic and stressful, but despite managing 7 costumes and making last minute hot glue gun repairs in our room, we had a great time.  My husband and I and a good friend all made it to the giant 600 person Marvel Photoshoot and we had a blast.

We are planning improvements to next years ‘Guardians” group.  My green friend there put her outfit together last minute and rounded up our Ronan and Star Lord. I’m going to update to a full or partial fur suit, and Groot will be updated with an internal cooling system, a better paint job and longer legs.  My husband survived his first full body suit experience quite well, and still give tons of “Groot Hugs” on the way back to the hotel room when by all rights, he should have been exhausted.

The rest of my costumes went over pretty well, but none of them were really meant to be amazing this year.  Mara was a repeat and my lightsaber only lit up half way. I thought I’d forgotten ALL my wigs, my Zelda crown crumbled in my hands and my bow got tangled in some chick’s armor and pulled it apart. I almost lost my friend’s elf ears, and Catra wasn’t done before Sunday night. At DragonCon. I forgot hubby’s green belt for his Jedi, and I couldn’t find my other silver glove for this photoshoot.  The only costume that worked 100% correctly was Ginger from Legend of Korra, and now I want to go back and shorten the skirt.  Oh well.  Other than costume malfunctions, it was a great weekend.

This was the first year I didn’t paint myself blue at all either.

We’re already talking about next years group plans, and roping more people into them, so we’ll see how it goes.

Costume updates! Groot!

Groot2

Groot mask/head that I’m making for my hubby so he can be Groot for DragonCon.  The suit is more or less done, he just needs to make his stilts for the damn thing.  I have one more step with the mask, which is to add a brown or black cloth for the neck, do something for the eyes and add the green tree flocking to the face and chest plates.

Mask and plates are carved from EVA floor tile foam with a Dremel and sanding bit.

I’m ridiculously excited with how this is coming out.  I haven’t had this much fun working on my own costumes in quite a while. Rockette is going to be a blast too.  This will be our first ‘duo’ costume with myself and my husband, and it’ll be his second costume.  The first one I made him was “Corran Horn” and I still gotta get him approved with Rebel Legion but I keep putting off taking the photos.  I have five Rebel Legion costumes approved for myself.

Midna Pendant done!

Posted by in 3D, Art, costumes | No Comments

And 3D print ready.

Midna_pendant_2Sized to about 3 inches long by 2 wide. The bottom crossover looks weird, but that’s the way it is on the game model, it doesn’t twist together until the last vine bit. I left out the center red gem because it’ll look better if you insert your own clear gem rather than painting it as part of the thing. The very middle bar should be cut off before mounting.  I’m going to ask my friend to do a test print and see how big the holes at the top actually are, and if the weird beak tips come out okay.

Saved as an STL file, should be no problems with it.

New 3D print object

Midna_PendantFinally started True Form Midna’s forehead pendant thing. I think I’m going to chop off the head of the bird/snake thing and start over- it’s lumpy and I don’t like it.  Once I fix or re-do the head, I’ll mirror it and adjust the crossings. The final product should be around 3 inches long at most.  It’s kinda big but not super big.

A friend of mine who I hope will be a co-worker soon just got a Maker Bot 3D printer.  Ours isn’t up and running yet, and she’s offered to test print some things for me, possibly helping me sell some items too.  Hers can only handle stuff up to around 4 inches by 4 inches, but that’s enough for some of the cosplay pieces I need, and some I can sell.

Snake Award

So some drama happened out in the Wilmington office – a copperhead snake got in the building.  They’re in a building were they can’t kill snakes, so they had to remove it alive somehow.

I whipped this up for them on the fly.

A few days apart.

I’m working on turning the rainbow deer into an illustrator file, and it’s coming along pretty well. I had a few requests to turn it into a print, so that’s exciting.

So far, I’ve sold three copies of my Midna Instructions PDF. I’m thinking of lowering the price to see if I’ll get more sales.

I like rainbows.  So sue me.

I actually got a LOT of positive responses from my facebook feed on this one, so I may try to convert him to an AI file and trace everything. lately I like black/white to rainbow ideas, and I’m pleased with how this one came out.

Last Pot Brewed #211, on the 3ft by 2ft white board.  The board itself came to me a little scratched up, so I really ought to just replace it myself.

Because I haven’t done much interesting at work lately. I need to get back into my 3D object stuff.

Pretty swoops on the big board.

Pretty soon I’m going to have some pre-DragonCon posts with costume bits.

Whelp. Ten years.

Posted by in Work | No Comments

I randomly feel like quoting Gross Point Blank. TEN YEARS, MAN! TEN YEARS! Nothing as interesting as John Cusack’s character, but at least I haven’t killed anyone.

The only thing I’ve spent longer at is being in a relationship with my husband, which also is kind of mind-blowing.  That includes pre-marriage time too – I’ve been at this job longer than I’ve been married.

Crazy.  When I started working here, we did EVERYTHING out of photoshop.  This was pre-VizRt, pre-Chyron and pre-Curious Maps.  We made all our maps as they were requested.  A couple months after I started I made a monstrous photoshop master map that was easier to just pick a an area from and turn around quickly.  All those maps have long since been deleted. I got a lot more use out of my 3D skills when I first started, but have been called on less and less.  Everything was done from Photoshop templates and animated or non-animated layers in Premiere.  Now we have Chyron and a much more set in stone guideline book to how things are supposed to look on-air.

My favorite things have always been being able to do something different- the 3D stuff, sometimes animated web banners, animated printed pages, getting to work on the animation for our coverage of the final shuttle launch a few years ago.  The time I got a complement from the Animal Planet people for an open I did-that was pretty awesome.

Getting free cable and internet all this time has been pretty nice too.

As of today, I am up to four weeks paid vacation- I’d been putting off taking any vacation most of this year because I wasn’t sure what the move to Charlotte would mean.  I think I’m supposed to get a block of plastic at some point as well.  Woot.
